As train enthusiasts with more than 40 years of experience, we have been dispensing wisdom and knowledge to customers at our store for the last 20 years. With a background in mechanical engineering, and an extensive research library, we can be your source for advice and identification of rare items.

Customers come to us for model trains sales, restoration, and repairs. Selling both new and antique products, our locally-made trains are unique, well-engineered, tested, and serviced. Additionally, we offer books, accessories, and blueprints.

The founder of Chatham Toys and Models has traveled the world in his role as a journalist and has picked up trains and toys from many different areas. Our customers are always looking for rare and historical items to add to their collections, and we will be happy to help anyway we can.

Chatham Toys and Models can offer, not just Washington, DC, train fans assistance in managing their collections but anyone anywhere in the world.

We have a lifetime of knowledge and extensive reference materials to hand.

We are happy to help with identification of  individual items as a free service. Our primary area of expertise is for those make in the UK and Europe but we have yet to find a train we didn't like.

Recently we came across an elderly couple who in disposed of their collection via a professional company and recieved much less than they should have.

Followiing that experience we have decided to offer and independent advisory service.

We can also assist with the disposal of collections and  appraise and advise the best avenues to realize the greatest return on your investment. This maybe in the US, Europe or the UK. We have world wide contacts and can work out the best options taking into account the sellers personal situation, the markets in the US, Europe, Asia and other parts of the world, freight costs, auctioneers commissions, exchange rates and other expenses.

This service is based on a fixed fee plus any related travel expenses, it is not based on a percentage of the items value. We do not accept commissions from dealers, auction houses or collectors for recommending them.

Our advice is completely independent and based on our experience, auction result monitoring and access to data bases of current prices from around the world.
